THE UK'S NUMBER ONE PAVEMENT SIGN COMPANY

How Do I Choose The Right Pavement Sign?

Pavement signs offer a unique opportunity to connect with potential customers who might otherwise overlook your brand or location. Their aim is to capture the attention of passersby who would typically stroll past your business without a second thought.

Through direct marketing and POS promotion, you can simultaneously boost foot traffic, enhance brand recognition, and increase revenue by utilising an advertising sign out the front of your premises. However, when faced with a wide range of pavement signs, it can be difficult to make the right choice.

Choosing the ideal pavement sign for your business involves considering several key factors. You must determine where it will be used, how frequently it will be used, the type of surface it will be placed on, and whether it will be positioned indoors or outdoors. The answers to these questions will help you narrow down your options effectively. Try our Pavement Sign Buyers Guide below for help choosing your new advertising signboard.

Budget

Budget is often the deciding factor when making a purchase for your business but like anything, you get what you pay for. Whilst you should not choose to scrimp you should research the potential products to make sure you are getting the best solution for your investment.

Aesthetics

Your pavement sign is an extension of your business so the way you present your sign is important. You must look to buy a well-made advertising sign and add professional and concise branding. Regular maintenance is also important; ensuring it is clean and tidy.

Location

The location of your pavement sign is a driving factor for the type of sign you should purchase. Really think about where you will be using it as wind and rain will have an impact of your outdoor sign. It is important your pavement sign can withstand typical UK weather.

Durability

Buying a pavement sign that is made specifically for its intended use and location will ensure your sign lasts for many years to come. Heavy-duty pavement signs are only heavy-duty if used in accordance with what they are designed for so choose wisely.

High Traffic Areas

The placement of your pavement sign along with the branding is so important. It can be the deciding factor on whether a potential customer even notices your brand, let alone visits, or spends money with you. Choose a style and size that compliments your brand.

Design

Pavement signs have all but a few moments to capture someone’s attention and convince them they need interact with your business. Branding must be vibrant and well-designed. It should have a clear message and be simple to understand even from a distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you need planning permission for particular pavement signs is essential. The current regulations around pavement signs are formalised and monitored by each individual UK council.

If you are planning to place your display board sign on privately owned or rented land, such as a garage forecourt, restaurant terrace or the enclosed area in front of a shop, in most instances there is deemed consent and therefore you should not require any planning permission to set up your sign. However, if your sign is illuminated, it may be subject to additional approvals, so it’s best to confirm with your local authority .

If you wish to set up your sign along a public highway, for example at a roadside or on a pavement, you will need to seek permission from your local authority (or the governing body which manages the site). To find out who you need to apply to, you can use this tool .

Water Base means you can fill the base up with water. This adds weight to the base for additional stability of your Pavement Sign. There is also a drain hole making it easy to remove the water if you want to move the Pavement Sign to another location. You can also use sand to fill up the base if required.

Most of our Pavement Signs can be left outside in conditions such and wind and rain. If they are suitable for outdoor use they will have an IP rating in the product page. This is an industry wide standard (Ingress Protection) that measures how resistant a product is against solids and water

IP Ratings Explained

IP56

The first digit "5" refers to the level of protection against the ingress from blocking solid foreign bodies such as dust, tools or fingers.

Level Desciption
0 No protection
1 Protection against solid objects larger than 50mm (accidental hand contact with open palm), but not against deliberate body contact
2 Protection against solid objects larger than 12mm
3 Protection against solid objects larger than 2.5mm
4 Protection against solid objects larger than 1mm (fine tools and wires, nails, screws, larger insects and other potentially invasive small objects)
5 Partial protection against dust and other particulates, such that any ingress will not damage or impede the satisfactory performance of the product
6 Full protection against dust and other particulates, including a vacuum seal, tested against continuous airflow

The second digit "6" refers to the level of protection against the ingress from blocking moisture.

Level Desciption
0 No protection
1 Protection against vertically falling droplets, such as condensation when an item is upright
2 Protection against vertically dripping water when enclosure is tilted up to 15° off vertical
3 Protection against direct moisture spray at angles up to 60° off vertical
4 Protection against splashing water from any direction, tested for a minimum of 10 minutes with an oscillating spray (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects)
5 Protection against low-pressure jets (6.3mm) of directed water from any angle (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects)
6 Protection against powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) of directed water from any direction
7 Protection against full immersion for up to 30 minutes at depths between 15cm and 1 metre (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects)
8 Protection against extended immersion under higher pressure i.e. greater depths.
9k Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature jet sprays, wash-downs or steam-cleaning procedures

As an example, our "MEGA-SIGN Large Water Base Pavement Sign" is rated as IP56 so this means:

  • Partial protection against dust and other particulates, such that any ingress will not damage or impede the satisfactory performance of the product
  • Protection against powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) of directed water from any direction
